Short answer

The theory test for a car licence (class B) is run by Statens vegvesen, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (NPRA). Besides Norwegian, you can choose English, Northern Sami, Arabic (MSA), Sorani or Turkish, and you can switch languages at any time during the test. The test has 45 questions, you have 90 minutes, and you need at least 38 correct answers to pass.

The test at a glance

  • Where: at a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office (trafikkstasjon), on a computer, in a room with other candidates. NPRA staff supervise the room.
  • Format: 45 questions, each with several options and one correct answer. You can go back and change answers before the time runs out.
  • To pass: at least 38 correct answers, so you can get at most 7 wrong.
  • Earliest age: 17½, which is six months before the age requirement for class B.
  • If you fail: you wait two weeks and pay again. You are told which topics you got wrong, but not the questions.

Languages and help during the test

For class B you can take the test in Norwegian (Bokmål or Nynorsk), Northern Sami, English, Arabic (MSA), Sorani or Turkish. If you need another language, you can apply for an interpreter-assisted theory test.

You can have the questions read aloud in Norwegian (ask for headphones), and you can ask for more time before it runs out. A dictionary is allowed; if you bring your own, it is checked for notes. Everything else, including your phone and watch, goes in a locker. Cheating can lead to a ban of up to 12 months.

Before you can book

  • First apply for a driving licence on Your Page (Din side). You can book the theory test once the application is registered and approved.
  • The application starts a police check of your conduct history, which usually takes 2 to 4 weeks.
  • To get a licence, you must be registered as a resident of Norway in the National Population Register. If you only have a D-number, you will normally not be able to get a licence.
  • Before driving lessons or private practice, learners take trafikalt grunnkurs, a 17-hour basic traffic course, from age 15. If you are 25 or older, you are exempt, but you must still take the dark-driving course (Trafikant i mørket) and the first-aid part.

On the test day

Bring valid proof of identity. At the office you take the photo for your licence in a photo booth, and you pay for the photo and the test before you start.

How to study when your language is English

You can sit the official test in English, but road signs and many traffic terms in Norway are in Norwegian. Learn the Norwegian names of the signs together with what they mean. Our sign library has 30 common signs with drawings, in Norwegian.

Kortklar is a theory quiz app by Fri Vei AS. Its questions and live game are in Norwegian Bokmål only, so it works best if you also want to learn the Norwegian words. A good way to use it is to play with a Norwegian-speaking friend or family member and talk through the answers. Statens vegvesen's page about practice driving with a companion is also only in Norwegian.
